Equipment

All our rookies are welcome to use our club gear to try out different pieces of gear. However, over time most people will want to purchase their own gear. Please find the list of gear below that is mandatory at practice and tournaments. We have also provided a list of vendors and places that a lot of our players buy their gear from. We highly recommend testing out certain gear before buying it (e.g., fins, sticks, etc). Don’t hesitate to ask our members if you have any questions!

Mandatory Gear

  1. Polo Cap – This is typically worn either over the mask or under the mask and needs to have ear protectors for player safety. In tournaments, you will be expected to have both a black and white cap.
  2. Mask – It is mandatory that all players wear a double lensed scuba mask for eye protection.
  3. Snorkel – This is to help you breathe at the surface while keeping your eyes on the game. It is recommended that you use a simple snorkel without vents as the game is played in a 3D fashion and requires quick breaths between bottom time. Some players might even cut the snorkel slightly shorter to reduce the effort to blow the water out. Some of players do buy this off Amazon.
  4. Hair tie/Snorkel keeper – This helps bind your snorkel to your polo cap.
  5.  Mouth guard – This protects your mouth during the game.
  6. A pair of sticks – Generally rookies can use a red stick from our club bin to signify to other players that you’re a brand new player. As you adjust and learn how to play the game, you will need to have a pair of black or white stick that helps designate your color in the water.
  7. Glove – This protects your hand during the game.

8. Fins – This maintains the speed and pace of the game. There are a variety of fins that our players choose from. Typically, the choice of fins is dependent on the player’s fitness, leg/ankle strength, and maneuverability. Some popular fin choices include:

Mares – These are great beginner UWH fins as it gets players used to kicking with longer fins. It generally provides the power to kick and doesn’t require too much leg strength to use.

Najade – These are shorter fins but provides a lot of speed and maneuverability for players. They are also easy to travel with.

Murenas – These are pretty similar to Najade in that they are also shorter fins with fast acceleration and maneuverability for players. They are also easy to travel with.

Breiers – These are highly coveted at high level play and used internationally due the speed it provides players from the carbon fiber blades. They are expensive and can break if improperly used. Would recommend only if planning to invest long-term in the sport.
